First-Year Students

The first year of college is a time to explore new ideas, opportunities, and possibilities. From New Student Orientation to Byrne Seminars, the transition to college student is an eye-opening process through which students begin to make connections and develop a deeper understanding of how learning in and beyond the classroom relates to their place in the world.

New Student Orientation includes academic planning and advising days that take place in the spring and the multi-day Fall Orientation, during which students get comfortable with the academic and social world of Rutgers. New undergraduates who share a common interest forge further connections through First-Year Interest Groups (FIGS). These short courses taught by high-achieving juniors and seniors let students explore a subject, get to know Rutgers people working in that field, and discover Rutgers resources that can nurture their interests. Complementing FIGS are Byrne Seminars, low-pressure courses taught by highly accomplished faculty that cover interdisciplinary study and the latest research in hot topic areas.

Through first-year programming, undergraduates become acquainted with Rutgers faculty, staff, students, and even alumni who are eager guides to learning, ready to welcome new students into the ever-expanding community of scholars at Rutgers.
