Multicultural Engagement
Multicultural Engagement fosters an inclusive and rewarding experience for all students at Rutgers by enhancing connections among students and faculty through curricular and co-curricular educational and community development opportunities. These programs include community connections, which provide undergraduates an opportunity to reach out to current high school students; collectives, which serve to enrich the experiences of students who have historically been underrepresented at Rutgers; academic collaborations that provide students with the chance to engage other students, faculty and administrators in meaningful discussions about diverse issues affecting the local, domestic and global communities; and research and assessment that highlights the experiences of students from various backgrounds at Rutgers. The Bridging the Gap Multicultural Experience The Bridging the Gap Experience is a weekend retreat that provides students with an opportunity to connect and discuss issues of race, ethnicity, social class, religion, sexual orientation and other domestic and global issues. Dinner Movie and Dialogue: incorporates films, courses, and faculty expertise in discussing relevant cultural and social issues. Student Multicultural Education Grants Programs These funding grants support the development of student-initiated programs that provide educational opportunities around issues involving race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class and religion. Procedures for Grant Submission: Student groups should submit a detailed proposal to the office at least (4) four weeks prior to the program. Upon receipt and review of the proposal, applicants will be notified of the grant approval status. Pre-Collegiate Outreach Initiatives: The Office of Multicultural Engagement and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions supports student coordinated programs that introduce potential and admitted students from underrepresented backgrounds to resources and opportunities at Rutgers University!
Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (RU-LSAMP) Rutgers is committed to fostering a diverse cadre of scholars and professionals for a global community. The Office of Instructional Support in conjunction with the Office of Academic Engagement and Programming coordinates the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (RU-LSAMP). This academic enrichment program, sponsored by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) provides academic, financial and social support for scholars from underrepresented populations to significantly increase the amount of graduates in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors. Men of Scholarship and Achievement (MOSA) Men of Scholarship and Achievement (MOSA) is a comprehensive retention program focused on facilitating an environment conducive for the academic and social success of Black and Latino male undergraduates at Rutgers. The program is affiliated with the Student African American Brotherhood (S.A.A.B.), a nationally recognized consortium of college and university programs that are committed to the academic success of black and Latino male students. Men of Scholarship and Achievement includes the following programs:
Summer Connection Students are welcomed to campus in the summer for an opportunity to make connections with current Rutgers students, faculty, administrators and alumni. Fall Community Reception The goal of this program is for Faculty/Staff and students to get begin the dialogue and connections needed in order to produce the needed support networks for African American and Latino men at Rutgers. Gathering of Men's Retreat The Gathering of Men is a 2-day weekend retreat that seeks to facilitate the utilization of the diverse political, cultural and economic perspectives of African American and Latino men at Rutgers University to build critical knowledge and awareness, create community, foster academic success and develop strategies for social change. Academic Excellence Recognition Programs Academic achievement among the African American and Latino male scholar’s is celebrated in with the Rutgers community twice an academic year. Women of Color Initiatives (WOCI) The WOCI is a series of programs that serves to outreach and connect women of color at Rutgers to create a supportive, empowering and educative environment.
